We Are Meant To Experience Life Together In Fellowship: Purpose Driven Life Chapter 18

“For where two or three have gathered together in my name, I am there in their midsts.” Matthew 18:20
We are meant to be with others and to share our feelings. We grow with the help of others and they in turn grow with our help.
This chapter reminds me of blogging, especially the Christian blogs and the blogs written by Christians. In our blogs many of us share who we are. We risk exposure, rejection and being hurt. As Rick Warren said, it requires courage and humility and requires that we depend on each other. How often are the comments sections full of empathy, where we agree, understand and affirm the blogger’s feelings and opinions? How often do we share each other’s troubles and problems? It’s because we feel part of a community.
Even though the World Wide Web is wide indeed, we feel connected to the one blogger and to the regular commenters. The thousands and potentially millions of others who could be visiting become invisible to us and we relate and connect to the small group which appears visible. In a way, we fellowship with the other bloggers, the other mommies, the other Christians whose lives become intimate to us, slowly and over time.
This is similar to what a small fellowship group in a church should look like. If we join a small bible study, over the next weeks we will get to know the personal lives of the members as they share and relate to the bible stories on a very personal level. Soon, the group will relate, empathize and be concerned for the other members. They will rejoice over triumphs and grieve over losses and hurts.
Fellowship in the real sense of the word is a very important aspect which is required for our nature, for the way God created us. We cannot live alone. We cannot live like hermits. We cannot live without a community.
