Inhumane Conditions In The Slaughterhouse Since 1993?? They Told Us California Cows Were Happy Cows!!

With this week-end’s meat recall, 143 million pounds of beef, the largest 
recall in history, comes an even more disturbing possibility. A video has surfaced that shows inhumane conditions may have occurred since 1993. That’s 15 years!! Did the government do anything to safeguard that consumers eat healthy food? Did the greedy big business slaughterhouse have the least thought about the public school children who would eat tainted meat? Are California cows happy cows as the advertising slogan claims? You decide.

You can find a lot of info and history on the inhumane conditions at http://www.hsus.org (Humane Society of the United States) or even on PETA’s website (www.peta.org).
It hurts me to think of what the cows, etc., are put thru in the slaughterhouses…they go largely unregulated and the conditions are often horrendous. Often, they operate under a veil of secrecy, in order to protect themselves from the public being made aware. What needs to happen is that the U.S. citizens, as a whole large group, need to raise up and demand change. They call animal welfare/rights activists “crazies,” in order to keep them down and deter others from joining the fight to protect animals, but in large numbers or when the media grabs onto it (as in the Michael Vick case) change will come!
So everyone, join the fight to protect the voiceless! These are God’s creatures, the same as we are, and it is our job to look out for them and treat them humanely.
And now I’ll step down off my soapbox.

Maria, I was just looking at your blog and you live in a very beautiful area. I very much enjoyed the photos of your Montana home.
I love animals and it really hurts me to see things like this recall. Not only were these poor beasts mistreated to the extreme, but they even died in vain since we are now throwing them out. It is sickening. I spent an entire summer with cows in a beautiful pasture when I was a child. They had names, and personalities and feelings just like us. They can even make loving pets. I’ve seen them here in California just standing and sitting in mud, with not a blade of grass in sight. I thought that was bad. Now there is this recall and the possibility that it might have been happening for the last 15 years at least. Plus if this one slaughterhouse was able to get away with it for so long, you can bet others are too. It’s one thing to humanely kill them for survival, it’s quite another to abuse, torture, mistreat and then just throw them out. This is a major sin in my eyes. Plus, what in the world kind of meat are these people feeding us?!!
I’m not too sure I like PETA though. If you look past the surface, they have done and stand for some pretty strange stuff. But like I said before I do love animals.

I love animals, too, and I was happy to hear of your childhood memories with the cows. I haven’t had that pleasure, but one time, I had a baby pig…a pineywood rooter. She was intelligent, loving, and funny, with her own little personality. In Montana, the cows are on large ranches, with acres and acres of grass. With the exception of “factory farms,” they have it good on the ranches here. But I, too, worry about what’s happening in the slaughterhouses. Over the years of working with HSUS, I’ve seen SO many slaughterhouse horror stories, but the government has turned a deaf ear, so far, allowing the abuse to continue. As for PETA, I know what you mean about their practices. I think I’ve figured out their logic, though. They do outrageous things, because they know that is the only way the media will give them coverage. They realize that one or two minutes of major media coverage is worth it, in order to bring the story to the general public. Otherwise, most people would never hear of the animal abuses that they’re trying to prevent.

Sounds like Montana has it right. These “factory farms” should not exist anywhere, especially here in the U.S. where we have so much space.
